Who is a candidate?

Few of us are born with that perfect smile, but modern
orthodontic treatment can bring us closer. Three out of 4 children could benefit
from orthodontic treatment. Forget your old ideas about orthodontics ("Tinsel
Teeth, ""Metal Mouth"). Today there are many styles of appliances that can help
children and adults actually make a fashion statement as their smiles are being
perfected. Best of all, straightening teeth, correcting protruding jaws, and
improving bites have all become less painful and more
successful.
Any of the following signs
may indicate that you or your child may benefit from orthodontic treatment:
 |
Early or late loss
of teeth in a child |
 |
Difficulty chewing or biting
|
 |
Finger sucking or other oral habits (especially
after age six) |
 |
Crowding, misplaced or blocked-out teeth |
 |
Jaws that shift or make sounds |
 |
Biting the cheek or into the roof of the
mouth |
 |
Protruding teeth |
 |
Teeth that meet in an abnormal manner |
 |
Facial imbalance |

OVERBITE:
Upper front teeth excessively over lap the lower front teeth.
Lower front teeth often bite into the roof of the mouth causing
gum irritation.
|
| OPENBITE: Spaces are seen between the
biting surfaces of some of the upper and lower teeth, either in
front or back, when the other teeth are biting together. |
|
CROSSBITE: Upper
teeth bite inside the lower teeth.
|
| MIDLINE ASYMMETRY: The lower front
teeth do not line up with the upper teeth when the teeth are biting
together. |
| IMPACTED TOOTH: The eruption into the
mouth of a permanent tooth is impaired and the tooth remains under
the gum. |
