The true purpose of orthodontic treatment is to create beautiful, healthy teeth that will last a lifetime.

Orthodontics plays a vital role in preventative dentistry. Good dental health comes from teeth and jaws that are well aligned. Straight teeth are not only attractive, but they are also easier to clean and maintain. When teeth are easier to keep clean, there is less chance of food impaction, decay and periodontal (gum) disease. There is less wear on teeth, less strain on jaw muscles and less strain on the temporomandibular joint when the teeth and jaws are in their proper position. The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to align the teeth and jaws in the most desirable position and to create a beautiful smile.

WHEN SHOULD ORTHODONTICS BE INITIATED?

Authorities say the most desirable age for a first visit to the orthodontist is between the ages of five to seven. An early orthodontic screening is very important to ensure maximum dental health. An orthodontic screening certainly does not always result in immediate treatment. The orthodontist may only want to check the eruption of the teeth and evaluate the jaw and facial growth. However, if interceptive treatment is indicted to prevent more serious problems from developing, an early phase of orthodontic treatment may be initiated.

Adolescence is the most common time to initiate orthodontic treatment; however, more adults are initiating orthdontic treatment to improve their smile and to promote their dental health.
